Penthos was the ancient Greek personified spirit (daimon) of grief and lamentation. He may have been numbered amongst the Algea (the personification of Sorrows).

This piece for recreated ancient Greek lyre, features the mournful, poignant qualities of the ancient Greek Phrygian Mode. Misnamed the 'Dorian' mode by scholars in the Middle Ages, this is haunting musical mode formed of 2 conjoined tetrachords which form the equivalent intervals as D-D on the white notes of the piano, but heard here, in the pristine focus of ancient just intonation, which further enhances the distinctive expressive qualities of all the ancient musical modes.
