Zephyrus is the god and personification of the West wind, one of the several wind gods, known as the Anemoi. The son of Eos, the goddess of the dawn, and Astraeus, Zephyrus is the most gentle of the winds, and is also associated with flowers, springtime and even procreation.

The dreamy feeling of gentle breezes is created via the use of the poignant ancient Greek Phrygian Mode – the equivalent intervals as D-D on the white notes of the piano (heard here in just intonation) and misnamed the ‘Dorian’ mode in the Middle Ages.

I attempt to also evoke the feeling of a soft breeze in this piece, by creating a feeling of movement, by passages of complex cross-rhythms between the left and right hand.
