The phorminx was one of the oldest of the Ancient Greek stringed musical instruments, intermediate between the lyre and the kithara. It consisted of two to seven strings, richly decorated arms and a crescent-shaped sound box. It most probably originated from Mesopotamia.

The phorminx seems to have been common in Homer's day, (8th century BCE), when it was used to accompany the rhapsodes. By the 5th century BCE, the more advanced classical kithara had supplanted this more archaic instrument.

The phorminx featured in this track, was recreated in modern Greece, from ancient illustrations of the instrument, by Luthieros.
