The daughter of the Titans, Uranus (Heaven) and Gaia (Earth), in classical mythology, Mnemosyne represented individual and collective memory. She is often cited as the source of language and writing, particularly the role of memorization, on which much of early Greek culture depended. She represented the memorisation required to preserve the stories of history and the sagas of myth before the introduction of writing

In this piece, I attempted to create a melody which literally sounded as if the lyre upon which it is being played were telling a story - a fitting theme for the musical portraits from Greek mythology which this album attempts to evoke. This piece features the almost poignant, transporting qualities of the ancient Greek Phrygian Mode – the equivalent intervals as D-D on the white notes of the piano (but heard here in just intonation), this was misnamed the ‘Dorian’ mode by scholars during the Middle Ages.

The theme of this melody was an improvisatory development of a shorter tune, "Song of the Tortoise Shell Lyre", which I originally created for my 2022 album, "The Cave of Hermes".
