From the recording Invocation to Athena
Medea was a powerful enchantress in Greek mythology, famous for the role she played in many adventures faced by Jason and the Argonauts on the quest for the Golden Fleece. Medea appears in most myths as a sorceress and is often portrayed as a faithful follower of Hecate. Medea, a name that resonates with magic and mystery, has its roots in ancient Greece.
The name itself doesn’t have a clear etymology, but it’s believed to be derived from the Greek word “μήδομαι (mēdomai)” which means “to ponder or devise.” This could allude to her cunning nature and her skills in devising intricate spells and potions.
As a sorceress, Medea’s powers were vast. She was skilled in herbal magic, potions, and poisons. Her knowledge of herbs allowed her to create love potions, healing elixirs, and deadly toxins. She could also summon and control beasts, a skill she inherited from her divine lineage. Her ability to rejuvenate the old into youth, as seen when she rejuvenated Jason’s father Aeson, showcases the depth of her magical prowess.
Featuring the rich and exotic timbre of my ‘Lyre of Apollo III’, I also demonstrate how rhythm can be performed on a lyre, by tapping the goat skin soundboard with my plectrum of carved goats horn like a drum.
