A spontaneous improvisation to demonstrate the versatility of my 10-string lyre, handmade in the USA by Marini Made Harps. This piece is in the distinctively dreamy, feminine, sensual-sounding ancient Greek Hypolydian Mode - perfect for evoking the attribute of Antheia; the ancient Greek goddess of the flowers.

This modal improvisation is yet another example of how much musical expressive possibilites have been so long forgotten in the modern western world; with only a palette of minor keys which are either just 'sad' or major keys which are 'happy'!

The Hypolydian mode (equivalent of F-F on the white notes of the piano; but played here in the purity of just intonation) was misnamed the 'Lydian' mode by scholars in the early middle ages.

This improvisation also demonstrates my improvisatory technique of creating variation on the lyre; not by adding lots of additional passing notes, but by actually varying the timber of the lyre - with low harmonics, high harmonics, finger-plucked & plectrum plucked tones,using the plectrum as a fret on the top string to an produce additional higher note & using a cane baton as to produce sound by hitting the strings like a hammered dulcimer.
